Two doves cast
outside their flocks
Could not explain their feathered frock
Their wings had turned as black as soot
And their hearts were shy and tenderfoot
Together they flew without a place
And together they grew with wit and grace
But their wings were still black as years went by
So they built their own niche beneath the sky
And those would come from other lands
Only to tell them they did not understand
Why two doves with wings of black
Refused to bleach them to turn them back
"They won't change so they're to blame
For their rejection! We're not the same!"
But they heard each word as a teaching song
And when they sang their wings were strong
And when they learned what the words were for
They showed their wings and were shy no more
They loved themselves and each other
And accepted difference as the way of the Mother
And when winter fell like frozen lace
Covering their sacred space
The cold could not touch their hearts or skin
Because loving was not a mortal's sin
And moonlight shone across the ground
As diamonds covered the Mother's gown
Her final lesson had come to pass
And she granted peace to the doves at last. |
